Event Proceedings
Main Issues Discussed:The talk focused on the results from a RCT of a life skills mentoring program. The speakers began by discussing the Theory of Change of youth mentoring programs and the current body of evidence on life skills mentoring. They then highlighted the evaluation methodology, i.e. how randomization was done at the student level. The speakers concluded by discussing the findings of the evaluation on personal and school well-being, future aspirations, grades, and attendance. The evaluation showed that mentoring improved children's relationships with their parents. It also improved emotional well-being, social well-being, and students' marks in math and science. There were limited improvements in school well-being, self esteem and aspirations.
Conclusions:The talk led to some important discussions with participants. We discussed the various ways of measuring impact, such as using self-reported measures and observational reports. Participants also asked about variations in results across demographic profiles of mentees, including gender, caste, etc. Additionally, participants also suggested that we should study the long term effects of the program.
